And some siding manufacturers prohibit power washing outright or cap the allowable PSI, so check your product’s instructions before anyone points a machine at your house; a blast that voids a warranty is expensive water.
There’s also the practical problem: raw pressure mostly relocates algae. It strips the visible layer, leaves the organism alive in the texture of the panel, and the green returns fast — often unevenly, in the wand stripes.
Soft washing inverts the recipe — heavy on chemistry, light on force. A detergent and algaecide solution is applied to the siding and given time to work, killing the algae and mildew and breaking down the grime film they grow in. Then everything rinses off at low pressure, in the neighborhood of a strong garden hose. Because the growth is dead rather than merely dislodged, the wall stays clean far longer, and nothing about the process forces water where it shouldn’t go.
What a professional adds beyond the jug of detergent is mostly judgment and protection: solutions mixed for the surface rather than one strength for everything, application bottom-to-top and rinsing top-to-bottom to prevent the streaking that plagues DIY jobs, dwell times long enough to kill but not long enough to dry on the panel, and landscaping pre-wetted and rinsed so the shrubs under the wall don’t pay for the wall’s bath. Honest answer: not forever, because the humidity that grew it isn’t going anywhere.
